My Literacy Autobiography

My name is Rosetta Thomas. I’m a junior here at NJCU and I’m majoring in economics. Currently I’m an online wholesale clothing reseller, as with any business you must figure out how you’re going to manage the money you’re putting in and what you’re getting out, so economics was the major that made the most since for me. My goal is to grow with my own personal business endeavors and gain as much knowledge as possible to execute ideas the right way. Some hobbies I enjoy outside of work and school are video editing, sewing, designing, and going to the movies.

The earliest memories I have of becoming into literacy were around 1st to 2nd grade. I was always excited and curious in what I could learn through books. One of my teachers, Mrs. Smith, played a big role in sparking my interest in reading. She had this interesting welcoming way of introducing us to books. I can still recall the feeling of imagining certain stories play out in my mind as she reads to us. My mom also played a significant role in nurturing my love for literacy. She would always make sure to read storybooks and bedtime tales almost every day. Her support was unwavering, and she always made sure our home was filled with books in our own library section of the house. Around 8th grade I gained an interest in reading books, specifically sci-fi based. I enjoyed reading a lot of books that had been adapted into cinematic films so I could see how well the story was told through the movie. I also enjoyed activities in high school that involved critical reading, allowing me to analyze and interpret texts in a broad discussion with my classmates.

If I had to choose a role model it would be my mom. She always finds the motivation to accomplish what she has set out to do even when so many obstacles are in the way of her goal. As a literate individual today, I perceive literacy as an important and empowering tool that opens the door to knowledge, discovery and progression in life. My mom always told me that knowledge is power, and you can go from not having anything in life to becoming successful by holding the knowledge needed for a variety of positions.  The ability to read, comprehend, and communicate effectively has always been a priority of mine. Something that we’ve added to my family to increase our knowledge is reading time. Everyone has to get in an hour of reading some point in their day. I like to read books that discuss certain topics that I’m not aware of because I get the opportunity to learn something new every time I read. Soon I plan on taking time to learn and study other languages. America is full of people from all over the world and it would be helpful for my personal and work life to be able to communicate to others that don't speak english.
